What is a doula?

A person who provides physical and emotional support, guidance towards accurate and up-to-date information, and advocacy for your choices whilst you navigate the perinatal period and make decisions about how you will meet and nurture your baby. However this looks for you, a doula will be there to support you with what you need, feeling nurtured, confident, and capable. At the heart of being a doula is the act of 'holding space', centring you completely in this journey, with unwavering faith in your innate ability to grow and birth your baby, and respect for your intuition in this process.

How can they help?

A Cochrane review (high quality, independent evidence) on continuous support in childbirth (Bohren et al., 2017) found that people who received continuous support were more likely to:

- have increased mobility, leading to more spontaneous vaginal births;

- have shorter labours;

- feel satisfied with the birth experience

And less likely to:

- have pain medication;

- feel negatively about childbirth;

- have instrumental births.
